Dinas Emrys Castle
This hill rising up from the floor of the Glaslyn valley has seen many historic events over the past two millenia. It is thought that there was a hillfort located here, then Roman arifacts have been found, there are the remains of a medieval castle thought to have been the work of Llewelyn ap Iorweth. As if that was not enough, it is believed that when Vortigen fled from the east of Brittannia to escape the Saxon invaders, that he sheltered initially at Dinas Emrys. It was here that some of the legends of the Mabinogion are based and the first mention of the Red dragon of Wales by Merlin (King Arthur's wizard, alias Merddin Emrys) after whom the castle has been named.
