Dolwyddelan Castle

Dolwyddelan is another of Llewelyn ap Iorweth's stone built castles erected sometime between 1210 and 1240. A native of Dolwyddelan, it is believed that his original home was a motte and bailey type castle on a rocky knoll down below this castle on the valley floor. This castle was to defend and control access through this Lladr Valley, as Dolbadarn controlled the Llanberis pass. The castle was eventually taken by the forces of Edward 1st on 18th January 1283 when it was immediately repaired and garrisoned . The troops were issued with white tunics and leggings, camouflaged for a winter campaign in the mountains. The castle was held until 1290 when it was left to fall into disrepair.
