Description

The BEE was one of the shipping losses during the Royal Charter gale, 25-26 October 1859.
Its Port of Aberystwyth Shipping Register entry shown in this image provides a technical description:

33.57 tons burthen. 1 deck, 2 masts, length 50ft, breadth taken amidships 14ft, depth at midships in hold 6.7ft. Schooner rigged with a standing bowsprit, round sterned, carvel built, planking wood, sailing vessel.

If you pass the magnifying tool over this image, you will find more information about the schooner the Welsh people who were associated with the schooner’s working life. For example, at the top right hand corner, you'll find the name of the master - Robert Jones Evans.

The BEE was transferred from Fleetwood to the Port of Aberystwyth Shipping Register in January 1855 on acquisition by Hugh Morgan of Machynlleth, merchant.

The schooner's register entry was closed with the annotation 'vessel stranded and became a total wreck in Careg Bay, Carnarvonshire, on 26 October 1859'. The BEE had travelled many nautical miles and a long way from its place of build - Bussie au Polmond Island of Cape Breton - in 1832.

Can you identify the location - Bussie au Polmond Island of Cape Breton - where the BEE’s story began?

Where is Careg Bay, Caernarvonshire, where her story ends?

You can use the People’s Collection Wales historic mapping to search for coastal place names in the late 19th century.

Who was Hugh Morgan of Machynlleth, merchant? What are the sources available to local history researchers which might help to identify his place of business?
