Description

Drawn by Falcon Hildred
Maenofferen quarry - winding house, detail drawing, 1999
Pencil, ink and watercolour on paper, 20 x 20 cm
Falcon has made a series of detailed drawings of Maenofferen quarry. A panorama is on page XXX and the following pages show individual features. This drawing records the winding house at the head of the incline from the underground galleries. Blocks of slate were hauled up by electric motors, their speed controlled by iron plates lowered into barrels of sulphuric acid. The windows provided a view down the incline, and the brake lever raised a stop which prevented wagons running away by gravity. Beyond is the unhooker's cabin, its wall cut away to allow large blocks to pass.
