Description

Drawn by Falcon Hildred
Remains of Bonc Goedai winding house, Oakeley quarry, 1998
Ink and watercolour on paper, 16 x 29 cm
By the time this drawing was made, one side of the drum house had been demolished to make way for a new road, and the frame that supported the drum had been sawn through, leaving circular marks on the jutting timbers where the drum had revolved. The artist's technique emphasises the mixture of large, sawn slate slabs and smaller infill pieces in the walls. The incline was one of a series raising blocks of slate from the underground galleries, and the building housed the electric winding mechanism.
