Steam Mill, Diffwys quarry, drawing, plan and elevations, 2004
Pencil, ink and watercolour on paper, 31 x 42 cm
High above the east side of Blaenau Ffestiniog, the ruins of Diffwys steam mill still dominate the skyline. This drawing forms an accurate archaeological record showing the tramways which brought slate blocks into the mill to be sawn on twenty-three slate saws then passed to the trimmers on the south side, where there was a truck to carry away the waste. The steam engine and boiler were in the extension on the north side. There was also a smithy. The heads of two inclines can be seen. Initials carved on the foundation block are also recorded. This mill superseded Melin Pant-yr-ynn and the oblong plan at top left shows the earlier mill for comparative scale.
