Drawn by Falcon Hildred
Holland's Level - mill looking towards Garreg Flaen Llyn, 2002
Pencil, ink and watercolour on paper, 16 x 29 cm
Holland's quarry was established in 1827 and the steam-powered slate mill was built on Holland's Level in about 1860. Finished slates were lowered down an incline to the Festiniog Railway. In 1878, Holland's became part of the Oakeley quarries. This level has been widened by modern tipping which still continues; the chimney has collapsed and the nearer (north) half of the mill has been demolished. This is one of several drawings which document the site in detail as it was in 1967, when Falcon and his friend Rita first saw it. It was still virtually the same in 2002.
