Description

Drawing by Falcon Hildred
Holland's Level - buttressed incline, 2001
Pencil, ink and watercolour on paper.
In these four views of the lines of a former incline and a flight of steps, the artist concentrates on the textures of the slopes of waste slate and the dry-stone methods used in construction. Different shades of grey bring out the shadows and give depth to the drawing. These are relict features in a state of ruin, and the buttresses under the incline speak of the problems of building and maintaining it in such a difficult landscape.
