Description

Allan James's grandmother talks about learning a verse from scripture and Christmas presents from the school mistress. Maesteg, early 20th century.

Summary:
Mrs Jones, the mistress, was the wife of the Baptist Minister. Every week we learnt a new verse of scripture. Every morning we would sing it through and on Friday we were expected to know it off by heart.
Every Christmas, she gave us a little present – a green orange and a handful of nuts. The oranges were as sour as vinegar.
She was getting on in years and would go off to sleep with her dog sleeping by her feet. We played a trick – we used to touch the dog with a pin and it would give a little yelp & she’d wake up.
