Description

View from Galltegfa, a hamlet on the outskirts of Ruthin, towards Clocaenog. This was a site of public execution prior to the 19th Century. The name Galltegfa may originate from Gallt-y-Dagfa, meaning Strangulation Hill. The last person to be hanged at the site was a woman named Alice Clarke from Wrexham. She was sentenced to death for murdering her baby daughter and was executed on 13th April 1801. She had been taken to Galltegfa in a cart containing her own coffin and afterwards was buried behind Llanfwrog Church.
