Description

William Henry Thomas from Pontarddulais was a Private with the Second Devonshire Regiment. He was wounded in the Battle of the Somme, and in a letter about his experiences he states that this Bible saved his life: "... After I arrived in the shell-hole I pulled my equipment off I noticed that a bullet had gone right through my belt to my left hand side breast pocket, broke two of three pencils and the rest. I want you to thank Gladys Jones [?] for this until I get time to write to her a few words of thanks it was the testament she gave me when home on leave that stopped the Bullet from going to my heart, it stopped right in the centre of the little Testament ...". The bullet-hole can be clearly seen in this photograph.
