Description

He was at Vimy Ridge, near Arras, in the Nord-Pas-de-Calais, during the battle of 9 - 12 April 1917. Soldiers were given a cup of rum before going 'over the top', and WHR didn't drink. He swallowed the rum and passed out. He spent three days in hospital and missed the action.
