Description

This photograph of Private Robert Vernon Carter Williams was taken shortly after he enlisted with the Army in 1914 as his uniform bears no regimental identification. Born in Talycafn, Williams joined the 16th Battalion Royal Welsh Fusiliers in December 1914. He was sent to France on 3 December 1915 and received notification of a commission to the rank of Second Lieutenant in the 21st Reserve Battalion, Royal Welsh Fusiliers and returned to England to begin training at Kinmel Camp, Bodelwyddan. He was later sent to Ireland where he served until demobbed in May 1919.
