Description

John William Evans (known as Jack) from Cnwcyrosfa, Bethania, Cardiganshire, enlisted in the Welsh Regiment in August 1914. He was initially sent to France as part of the 2nd Welsh Regt attached to the 112 Railway Company, before returning to England, and then sailing in June 1915 as part of the Mediterranean Expeditionary Force bound for the Dardanelles (Gallipoli). He was severely wounded following the landing on Suvla Bay (6/7 August 1915) and was in No Man-s Land for three days. By 16 August he was hospitalized in Alexandria, and then he was sent back to the King George Hospital, London.

There he began a romance with his future wife, Ann Jones, who came to the hospital having read that her old school-friend was recovering there. After the war Jack and his wife settled in Merthyr Tydfil, where he died aged 87 in 1972.
