Description

Benjamin Ernest Payne, son of Mr & Mrs T.S Payne of Forgefield Terrace, Norton. He served as Corporal 215236, of the 2/1 Denbighshire Hussar Yeomanry and died of Pneumonia aged 28, on 20 July 1918 at Norfolk War Hospital, Norwich. He is buried at Oystermouth Cemetery and remembered with honour on the Great War Road Screen Memorial, All Saints' Church, Mumbles, Swansea. Prior to enlisting in October 1916 into the Royal Welsh Fusiliers, Payne was previously employed by Messrs. Baldwin, Grocers, Mumbles. South Wales Daily Post noted that- 'Corporal Payne was engaged as a shorthand writer & typist in the Quartermasters' office stationed at Eccles. A few days after returning from leave he contracted influenza, pneumonia supervening.'
