Description

This impressive photograph shows the town of Guernica in flames following its destruction by the German Luftwaffe on behalf of General Franco's Nationalist forces. The infamous episode has been depicted by Pablo Picasso in his abstract painting of the scene. John Williams Hughes, a volunteer with the humanitarian effort during the Spanish Civil War, brought this photograph back to his home on Anglesey. He used this, and other photographs in his talks and lectures about the conflict.
