Criccieth Castle

Around or shortly after 1230, llewelyn ab Iorwetth built a castle at Criccieth. This consisted of an imposing gatehouse, the rectangular south-east tower and the curtain wal surrounding the inner ward. Llewelyn ap Gruffydd added the south-west tower and the curtain wall surrounding the inner ward. After the castle was taken by Edward 1st, the gatehouse was heightened and he was probably responsible for the construction of the engine tower, although it may have been built by Llewelyn ap Gruffydd.
